There is a welcoming beginning to the foothills of the Ozark Mountain range, it’s called Pope County. The area offers an abundance of splendid sites to see while traveling on the ever popular Interstate 40. The beautiful mountains can be seen from practically anywhere in this
beautiful area. Whether getting a true valley view from the Arkansas River Valley, standing next to the beautiful river or the largest man-made lake/reservoir in the state there is nothing to see but beautiful mountains. The local mountains stand above everything like giant kings over loyal adoring subjects. The mountains also have a way of inviting mountain lovers to come to the peaks for a bird’s eye view at its peers as they peer back at all to see. Crow Mountain, one of the most famous and most visible mountains from the interstate, has a long and beautiful view to and from it. The mountain invites people to live at its base and atop its crest. The mountain finds a way of creating a magnificent view for all to see. These local mountains offer climbing, hiking, camping, and biking; so no matter what mountain-related outdoor activity anyone may enjoy, it can be found with great ease right here in Pope County.
The fishing in Pope County is second to none in this great southern region. There is always, the aforementioned beautiful man-made lake/reservoir, Lake Dardanelle along with Lake Atkins, Illinois Bayou and the Arkansas River, the second largest river in the Unites States, all with great fishing for all enthusiast and sportsman. Lake Dardanelle stretches for over 50 miles of great boating and fishing. The Illinois bayou has four forks with varying measures in length from two miles up to twelve miles of great rafting and fishing. Lake Atkins offers great fishing for all those who enjoy quaint back-water fishing. A person couldn’t go much more than a few miles in this beautiful area without crossing paths with one of these or other great waterways. This county would have to be one of the “must-see” locations in Arkansas.
There are many things to do for anyone who doesn’t enjoy the outdoors as well. There is a way to get away from the metropolitan areas, and still be within a reasonable distance of anything of need. Pope County is conveniently located about half way between the two largest metropolitan areas in the beautiful state of Arkansas, Little Rock and Fort Smith. Small town atmosphere is abundant here; whether it is a visit to beautiful Russellville for most shopping needs, or to one of the other small towns in the county, anyone should certainly enjoy all that the townships that this county has to offer. A person could easily pay a visit to the historic home of the “Atkins Pickles” here in Atkins Arkansas. The Potts Inn Museum, is located in Pottsville Arkansas, a tribute to one of the historic stops by 1850’s stagecoaches here in this area. These places are a must see for every trip here. There are many other quaint towns, such as London, Dover, Hector, and Tilly, which speak for themselves upon every visit to the area.
There is an overwhelming abundance of scenery, shopping and activities for all to enjoy in this area. Some come for the beautiful mountain views and activities. Some come for the magnificent water activities and fishing. Some come for the small town atmospheres that are accompanied by an abundance of historical significance. There are always those that come to partake in all of these activities. Whether passing through, going on a family vacation, or looking for a great weekend get-away this is the place to be.
